Concert Log

Every U2 show I've been lucky enough to attend. Nine concerts across three decades — each one unforgettable in its own way.

Zoo TV Tour

My first U2 concert. I was completely unprepared for the scale of it — the video screens, the ironic overload of imagery, the sheer volume of Larry's drums. Bono emerged in the MacPhisto character for the encore and I was changed. Zoo TV wasn't just a concert. It was a total sensory experience that redefined what live music could be.

ZooRopa / Zoo TV Outdoor

One year after my first show and the Zoo TV juggernaut had only grown larger. The outdoor production felt almost surreal — lemon-shaped mirror ball, satellite dishes, and screens everywhere. The opening of Zooropa into Numb was a total shock to the system. Stayed until the last note of 40 faded into the night.

PopMart Tour

The lemon! The golden arch! The 40-foot Mirrorball Lemon! PopMart was U2 at maximum irony — skewering consumerism while simultaneously selling it out. The staging was absurdist genius. If I Disappear (Please Make It Stop) and Miami were revelations live. An underrated tour that has aged remarkably well.

Elevation Tour

Two days after 9/11, this was one of the benefit shows at MSG. The emotional weight in the room was unlike anything I've ever felt at a concert. When Bono unveiled the names of the victims scrolling on his inner jacket during One — there wasn't a dry eye anywhere. I will never forget that night as long as I live.

Vertigo Tour

The elliptical walkway stage was brilliant — U2 going back to an intimate(ish) arena setup after the stadium behemoths. Vertigo opened and the pit exploded. City of Blinding Lights before that made the hair on my arms stand up. The encore of 40 with the whole crowd singing the counter-melody long after the band left — that's what U2 does that nobody else can.

U2 360° Tour

The Claw. 97,000 people. Possibly the greatest stage production in the history of live music. As the sun set behind the stadium and Where the Streets Have No Name kicked in, I fully understood why humans invented the word "transcendent." The 360° setup meant every single person could see the stage — U2 giving everyone a perfect view. Breathtaking from start to finish.

Innocence + Experience Tour

The indoor catwalk through the crowd was inspired. Two stages connected by a raised walkway — U2 playing in the middle of the audience. The Songs of Innocence material hit harder live than on record, especially Raised by Wolves and Cedarwood Road. A personal and emotional night. Bono dedicating The Troubles to the Charleston shooting victims hit hard.

The Joshua Tree Tour 2017

The Joshua Tree played in full, in sequence, on its 30th anniversary. It was exactly what you think it was. Where the Streets Have No Name opened the set and every single person in the stadium lost their mind simultaneously. Running to Stand Still brought silence and tears. A rare thing: a celebration of a perfect album that actually lived up to the album itself.

U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere

Achtung Baby played in full inside the most advanced live entertainment venue ever built — a 160,000 sq ft LED sphere that wraps around the entire audience. Nothing in thirty years of concert-going prepared me for this. The visuals weren't a backdrop — they were a living world you were inside. Watching Mysterious Ways with the Sphere doing things screens aren't supposed to do. The future of live music, experienced right now.
